"Over Yonder Peonies"

June 20, 1996

- written while watching Grandma look "over yonder" from the back yard -

I feel the farm — in my bones

my elbow in line with carpal tunnel
    remnant bits of the Mother
    under my nails
fingers swollen from the day’s pulling
    never catching up to mulch
    the noxious green down

I feel the farm — in my heart

    my soul blooms with the
    over yonder peonies
    catching petals
in the salad bowl to bottle the essence
    no need
    it is in our smiles

I feel the farm — in my parent’s parents

    my silver haired mentor
    blindly looks over the wall
    down below
    seeing her memories

      an english gentle man
      walks through nature’s confetti
      answering the dinner bell

and this child misses being his "witch"
        in the tub
leaving him flowers after a scare

    and she turns
    darling
    with raspberry blossoms hanging
    tangled from her hair

I feel the farm — I breath its life
